There is a small white terminal building on the pier, as well as designated parking for shore excursion buses and taxis. Palermo cruise port consists of three berths that can accommodate cruise ships of all sizes and several berths for ferries serving major Mediterranean cities and mainland Italy. The Best Sicily Hike and Bike Tour from Catania | Italy Palermo Marina is located approximately a 10-15 minute walk from the port. It is located approximately a 25-minute walk from the city center and Palermo Cathedral, the prominent city landmark. The port of Palermo serves both cruise ships and ferries. When ship is in port for Rome [Civitavecchia) take there local train you can buy your tickets at a newspaper stand about two blocks from the ship they are cheaper there, train not to far from there when you get off train go to subway A until Termini station and then B to get off at that Coloseum subway was included with are train tickets when we went.Palermo is the capital city of the island of Sicily (Italy) and its largest port together with the port of Messina. Some folks are so clever with excursions not using the cruise line and they generally have all the contact info you need with agencies that deal with cruise ship passengers and their need to return to the pier on time. ANy ideas?Īre you on a roll call for you cruise? I have found lots of information over the years on these. I am guessing Florence to see David/Duermo should be an excursion and when you visit Naples an excursion to Pompei should be an excursion. What can you do on your own and what should you do as an excursion. Obviously it would be awesome to do NCL tours, but when you multiply that x5 it gets expensive. We have 8 hours in Malta, 9 hours in Sicily/Messina, 10hours in Naples and 11 hours in Florence. Has anyone out there assembled any sort of cheat sheet itinerary on what to do, where to go, how to maximize your time in port to get the best experience and live the destination? I realize i can google this, but wanted to reach out to the experts for any thoughts. Travelers are my wife and three teen boys (12, 15, 17). I am taking a NCL cruise this June and we are visiting Malta, Messina, Naples Florence and Rome. Maybe peak their interest before you even leave ! Excellent television, in my opinion, discusses the importance of the Colosseum on the Roman culture and why this structure was so important to each emperor, etc. There is a lot there within walking distance.Īs for Rome, consider trying to get your boys to watch "Colosseum" streaming on History Channel (at least a couple episodes) before you go. I would get to Florence, even if you end up walking around the center of town on your own. Sweeping coastal views, beautiful towns, cool ocean breeze, everyone would enjoy, I think. Pompei may not appeal to all, but Amalfi Coast is wonderful. Personally, my first priority for excursion budget would be Naples. Could head back to ship or go to Mdina, which is not that far. head to central Valetta and stroll through downtown for a couple hours. However, EuroCruiser suggestion of building in an easy day is a good idea. Happy planning! □️Īgree with carlmm, I would not skip a port - too much invested not to take advantage. Once you have an idea of what you might like to do, let us know as there are many willing to help with all the different options available to you to get to where you want to go. There are many options in each location depending on your and your families interests and wish lists. A good place to start is to look at all the ship's shore excursions to see if anything there appeals to you all. For example don't go to Pompeii from Naples if you hate ruins and would prefer to wander around Naples and eat pizza. Do not be tempted to do the most popular option if you have no interest whatsoever in seeing or doing that option. The same in Messina if you want to go to Taormina or Mt Etna. In Naples you can get to Pompeii by train but you may prefer an excursion. In Malta, Messina and Naples you dock in the city centres but again you need to know what you want to do. Florence and Rome are both far away from their respective ports so any outing to them will either require an excursion, either ship or private, or using public transport. You will need to do a lot of research and decide on what you would like to do. On the other hand, Sonata N.14 has no lyrics. Paul wrote this song to cheer up John's kid, after his parent's divorce. It gets really obvious when you listen to the lyrics. On the one hand, Hey Jude evokes optimism and hope. Both songs generate an instant connection with the listeners. Let's consider two well-known pieces of music: Hey Judeby The Beatles, and the Piano Sonata N.14 by Beethoven. Now that we have discussed modes, I would like to return to CHOOSING THE KEYĮven though we can emphasize an emotion with modes, each key has its personality. Try to apply the theory we have learned today to the other scales. But, with a little practice, you will be all set. What if you want to write a song in C major with an evil feeling on it? The suitable mode is Locrian and you might start the score with B or the chord B diminished. For this, you might start your composition with D (the root note of the mode) or the chord Dm (the root triad of the mode). You can do this starting the composition with the mode's root note or root triad.įor example, imagine that you want to compose a sad but hopeful song in C major. This way, you will be more accurate with the emotions you want to project. Composing using the ''forgotten'' modes, will stand out your music. The different modes: name, degree of the scale, notes (using C major as an example) and the related emotionsĪs I mentioned before, the Ionian and Aeolian are the most common modes. So, you can deduce that there are seven modes. What if you choose as the starting point one of the remaining notes of the scale (D/E/F/G or B)? Well, you will get five other modes with their respective emotional effect. Major and minor are the most common modes. The main thing to get here is that all modes are equal relatives, and we should treat them accordingly. This is caused simply by the starting note. When you play the white notes from A to A, you get a natural minor scale.Ĭ major and A minor as relatives scales as they are, they have the same notes. When you play all the white notes in a keyboard from C to C, you get a major scale. Practicing is the best way to process theory. I recommend to try this out in a keyboard or any instrument you have access to. I will explain this using C major as an example, but remember this works with any other scale. Modes give the emotional color to a particular scale by starting in different degrees of the major scale formula. To talk about keys and emotions is to talk about modes. What would I like to elicit in those who listen? What is the story I want to tell? If there is any. What is the emotion that is triggering my composition? Having clear intentions makes the decision process easier when composing. To begin with, I suggest taking a little time to understand what is the desired effect you want. In a piece of music, the key is the center of gravity to which the melody and harmony tend. Let me know if you would like a dedicated article regarding instrumentation. I am not going to delve into this for us to focus on projecting emotions. Therefore, the key needs to be in the right register. Each instrument has a particular sound and ''soul''. Many factors influence the decision about the key, for example, instrumentation. What I want is to encourage an awareness exercise that can enhance our capacity to communicate and connect through music. With these articles, I am not suggesting for us to rationalize the composition process or the emotions we want to project. Composing is not necessarily a rational act. Composers are a medium for music to come alive. Note: I think of music as a living organism. Today, we will talk about choosing the right key to project the emotions we want. Well, this is the first article of the series that I announced. Did you read it? I hope that you liked it. Last week I posted an article called: Music, a catalyst for emotions. His mother (the marvellous Karuna Bannerjee) is mired in daily tasks – looking after Apu and his sister Durga, struggling with the demands of her ageing sister-in-law and her impractical husband. 'Pather Panchali' is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime. It is a feature-length film with a runtime of 2h 5min. It has a very high rating on IMDb: 8.3 stars out of 10. His father, a priest lost in dreams of writing plays and poetry, is so weak he won't even ask his employer for his back-pay. 'Pather Panchali' drama movie produced in India and released in 1955. A small boy, Apu (Subir Bannergee), is living with his impoverished Brahmin family in rural west Bengal. The story seems superficially insubstantial. Certainly director Satyajit Ray and cinematographer Subrata Mitra showed a miraculous gift for lighting scenes, coaxing intimate and utterly convincing performances from children and other non-professional actors, and allowing narrative to grow seamlessly – just as happened in the best of the films by Ray's western mentor, Jean Renoir. Perhaps this inexperience gave everyone involved the freedom to create something new. On the first day of the shoot, the director had never directed, the cameraman had never shot a scene, the children in the leading roles hadn't been tested and the soundtrack was composed by a then obscure sitarist (the great Ravi Shankar). I t was the birth of a cinema, certainly the birth of a new kind of Indian cinema. Shot from 1953 to 1955-under conditions of almost inhuman difficulty-by a 30-year-old newcomer working in a film industry that was primitive both technically and artistically, 'Pather. I went in there and was like, “Oh, my god. He brought me to a studio called Sound Labs. I started playing softball with a studio team, and a friend that worked at Music Plus with me introduced me to some people. Every rock star was coming in, plus all the people from CBS Records. I decided to hang it up and go get a job at Music Plus on Ventura, next to Du-par’s Restaurant. I’d accidentally sewed my finger, and the girl managing was like a tyrant. I’ll sell them clothes if I have to.” That’s what I came out to do in California. My dad had gotten me a sewing machine instead of a piano, so I went to school in Boston for fashion design, because it was right next door to the Berklee College of Music. PS: When I first came out from Rhode Island to California, I really wanted to be a musician. Paula, how’d you end up managing studios? PS: We oversee it all, but we have a guy who manages and books the mastering. A couple are production suites, which are basically spaces for people to write.Īnd the mastering studios as well, how many are there?Īre you specifically on the studio end of it, as far as management? Patrick Kraus: We have five actual studios. How many active studios are there in the building, not including mastering? Isn’t that funny? I beat Rose Mann-Cherney, my mentor. I think I’m the first woman to get in a movie for running a recording studio. But I guess it was the Sound City film that really gave you some visibility. You’re one of the better known studio managers, and you are running a famous studio. She runs a tight ship, and the studios are in tip-top shape." Capitol Studios remains very busy under Paula's management, and as Don Was says, "She's as good as they come, man. This year marks 60 years of Capitol Studios, as well as the iconic Capitol Records Building they are housed in, so I dropped in to talk with Paula and some of her colleagues, including Patrick Kraus (Senior VP, Head of Studio, Production & Archive Services/Universal Music Group) and Ursula Kneller (Director Special Projects/Universal Music Group). But what one might not learn from that appearance is that Paula has since run the famous Capitol Studios for over 25 years as the Vice President/Studio Manager. In Dave Grohl's documentary, Sound City, viewers were treated to stories from the vivacious, smart, and funny Paula Salvatore - the manager of Sound City Studios for nine years. According to Take-Two Interactive’s 2021 annual report, the company saw a jump in consumer spending for GTA Online of 31%. That’s a huge deal considering how much GTA Online has continued to grow. If GTA Online goes through a massive revamp, it’s not clear what will happen to player characters, although history doesn’t paint a hopeful picture. If you want to move your character now though, you’re out of luck. They could previously be moved once, with players opting to bring theirs to the PS4 or Xbox One once they launched. Rockstar hasn’t exactly been forgiving in the past with players moving their GTA Online characters. What happens when GTA Online moves to a new location? What happens to the properties players have bought, the cars they own, the weapons they have, the clothes they wear? But most importantly, players will wonder what will happen to their characters. GTA Online was designed to be a time sink, and people have indeed sunk tons and tons of time into the game. That’s nine years of growing one character, earning money with them, and buying clothes, properties, weapons, and cars, then customizing them all. Like any other game, GTA Online lives and dies by its player base, although it has a dedicated one that hasn’t let go for nearly nine years.Ĭonsider for a moment that there are people who have been playing GTA Online since the game was released in 2013. Whatever jump GTA Online eventually takes with GTA 6 - whether it’s overhauled entirely or simply moves to a new location with new characters - Rockstar needs to ensure it’s done in a way that doesn’t hurt players. GTA Online will have to be updated with that as well, it can’t look and feel like a game from 2013 while a mainline entry sports cutting-edge tech. GTA 6 isn’t going to release this year, and may not even come out next year, so it’s reasonable to expect a similar graphical leap as that seen with RDR2. We’ve already seen the improvements Rockstar can make in a short period of time with Red Dead Redemption 2, which came out five years after GTA V and still manages to look like a modern masterpiece. That applies to whatever updated engine GTA 6 runs on as well. They have to be equal in every respect, otherwise, there’s going to be a strange disconnect. Players will have to be able to explore wherever the game is set, talk to its characters, and have access to the same suite of vehicles and weapons available in the single-player game. Players work closely with them, especially Franklin, who is the focus of the game’s latest expansion, The Contract.įor GTA 6, the same will have to be true. Two of the game’s protagonists, Trevor and Franklin, appear in the game as quest givers. Once the game is stand-alone, the remnants of GTA V will still be in there. GTA Online’s latest expansion lets players work with Dr. If you want to play GTA Online right now, you have to go through GTA V. That’s going to change soon, according to today’s Rockstar Newswire post, but for anyone who’s played the game so far, that’s been the experience. Currently, if you want to play the game, you have to purchase GTA V and progress through the game’s prologue. The game even sports more heists than GTA V, one of which, the Cayo Perico heist, takes players to an entirely new area.īut still, the two are inseparable and will continue to be even when GTA Online is sold by itself. GTA Online has gotten more cars and weapons through regular updates. Sure, Grand Theft Auto Online has expanded past the single-player game it sprouted from. It features the same characters and locations as the single-player game, and it has the same cars and weapons. Like GTA V, Grand Theft Auto Online is set in Los Santos. They have, from the beginning, shared more than just basic DNA. Hand in handĭespite the fact that Rockstar is releasing GTA Online as a stand-alone title - it’s launching alongside GTA V‘s next-gen version on March 15 - it and GTA V go hand in hand. The massively popular online Grand Theft Auto title will have to change to suit whatever GTA 6 ends up being, and that change has to come with players in mind first. And the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto franchise, whether it’s named GTA 6 or something else, will be a turning point for GTA Online. The game is a cash cow for both Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two Interactive. We're pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the series is underway.īut more important than GTA V is its multiplayer counterpart, Grand Theft Auto Online. With every new project, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we've previously delivered. Many of you have been asking about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series.
